FAQ's

What is the turnaround time?

My stated turnaround time is three weeks (starting from the date of the receipt of ashes if they are to be included).  The process has many steps and takes several days to complete.  I will try to complete your piece faster if possible, depending on capacity.

I have an idea in mind-do you accept custom orders?

Absolutely!  I love coming up with new designs within the limits of what’s possible with fused glass and metal clay.  Message me and we can discuss your ideas.  For a custom order, I will send you sketches to approve before giving you a quote based on the time and materials required for the design.  After your approval, I will list the custom order online marked for you only.  After you purchase it, I will get started making it.

How much cremation ash do you need?

First of all, I know it can be very emotional to open the container of your loved one’s ashes. Sometimes it can help to have someone else retrieve the ashes for you. For jewelry pieces, I only need a tiny amount of fine ash (approximately 1/8 teaspoon).  For best results, try to send the most fine and powder-like ash that you can.

What should I put the ashes in for shipping?

Within the US, I have tiny screw top containers available that I can send you in a bubble mailer upon request.  For our international friends, or if you want to speed up the process, you can place the ashes in something like a prescription bottle (please enclose the bottle in a Ziploc bag for extra safety) or in a double-bagged Ziploc bag within a bubble mailer.

How do I ship the ashes?

The USPS has particular rules about sending any amount of cremated ashes that is designed to protect them.  It involves a large box and requires Priority Mail Express-see their website for more information.  However, if you should choose to send the tiny amount of ash that I need via regular first-class mail, I will still accept them.  You can insure your package to include tracking.  The choice of shipping method is yours to make.

 What is metal clay?

I use two kinds of silver metal clay--fine silver (99.9% silver with no other metals included) and sterling silver (96% silver with 4% copper).  Silver metal clay has fine particles of recycled silver suspended in an organic medium that is clay-like in nature.  Therefore, it can be shaped like clay during the design process.  It is constructed in several stages, then dried and sanded before going into the kiln to be fired.  After the organic binder burns out, the piece is kept at a hot temperature to sinter the metal particles together for strength.  The fired piece is now just fine silver or sterling silver and is finished with metalsmithing techniques.  Inclusion of fused glass is an additional step and kiln firing in the process.
